The Museum der Moderne Salzburg operates two venues. Prominently located on Mönchsberg hill above the roofs of the old town, the new building, which was inaugurated in 2004, presents contemporary and modern art in one of Salzburg’s most beautiful spots. The starkly modernist structure hosts temporary exhibitions of art with an international appeal and works from the museum’s own collections on three gallery floors.
The Museum der Moderne Salzburg’s second venue, the Rupertinum, a baroque-era building in the old town whose façade was redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, is located at the heart of the Salzburg Festival district. Reopened in the summer of 2016 after extensive renovations, the Rupertinum accommodates presentations of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art as well as the new Generali Foundation Study Center and Franz West Lounge.
