Curated by Chair Rose Viggiano, “Site Unseen” is on view Saturday, June 20, through Saturday, July 11, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.“Conjuring up thoughts of past events or unforeseen futures, known or imagined,” says Viggiano, “these artworks reflect memories of people and places that have impacted the artists’ lives. The concepts and concerns of many of the artists in this show are expressed through visual metaphors, symbols and illustrations.” Selected works explore losing family members, handmade crafts, natural versus constructed environments, microscopic anatomy and endangered tree lobsters. The range of materials and techniques used includes video, mixed media, installation, embroidery, cut paper, wood and oil on canvas.Participating artists include Morgan Goodwin Acheson, Simona Auerback, Carolyn Bednar, Mirrie Choi, Rebecca Delaney, Gabriella Giaconio, Nick Gibney, Veronica K. Hartowicz, Tammy Kim, Zoe Pollak, Janelle Quashie, Jennifer Sabino, Mingyang Sun and Jenna Sweeney.MAT Art Education at SVA provides a hands-on learning environment where student teachers research and explore educational issues and topics while continuing to make art. Course work relates directly to fieldwork and student teaching through discussion of course development, classroom management and age-appropriate application of educational theory.
