About
Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is the house of the artists and shows exhibitions that are produced, initiated or chosen by artists. Den Frie is especially focused on contemporary artistic communities, collective exhibitions, artists associations and experimental groups and networks.
The house is built by artists for artists and today strives to make an interesting and varied exhibition programme, that challenges the exceptional architecture of the building. 8 exhibitions are shown each year, most of them group exhibitions. Apart from those, soloexhibitions with either younger, promising artists or artists, that have made important contributions to art history are presented.
Project FRI:rum
The donation from A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal has enabled the ambitious renovation and expansion of the building and function of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. The new construction will be completed during the year of 2014 and thereby marks the 100 years jubilee at the current address at Oslo Plads.
Den Frie is pleased to announce the launch of FRI:rum, a new project in connection with the expansion of the building. FRI:rum is a cross aesthetic, artistic experiment running in parallel with the building process, where artists are invited to use the transformation of Den Frie as a starting point for artistic inspiration. In 2013 and 2014 a series of artists, writers, performers, composers and musicians will be inspired by the unique history and architecture of Den Frie, turning the disorder and noise from the construction into art, and bringing attention to the urban, public space as a potential environment for art.
