The first seat of the gallery opened in Rome in 1898, year in which Pasquale Addeo, great-grandfather of the current owner Fabrizio Russo, opened an antique gallery in via del Babuino. Later the activity was kept on by the son-in-law Franco Russo, also specialising in Old Master paintings, and later by his brother Ettore. The latter, with the third brother Antonio, opened the new seat of the Barcaccia in Piazza di Spagna, that soon became one of the most prestigious Italian Modern Art galleries, establishing privileged relationships with some of the most important painters of the 20th century such as Giorgio de Chirico with whom they had an exclusive contract for more than twenty years. Thanks to the passion and the seriousness of Ettore and Antonio Russo, the gallery of Piazza di Spagna became an absolute reference point to the whole Italian artistic market. For more than forty years, the gallery exhibited the works of important Italian and international artists also in the seats of Via della Croce and Via della Fontanella.
Franco Russo continued to dedicate himself to the artistic world, working with Old Master paintings (Tiziano, Dosso Dossi, Caravaggio, Lega, Segantini, Bellini etc.), with an interest towards Contemporary Italian painting.
After the unexpected death of Franco Russo in 1960, the activity of the family was continued by the son Salvatore who opened the prestigious seat of the Scalino in via Capo le Case, followed by the opening of other seats in Salsomaggiore, Abano Terme and Milano Marittima, with a growing interest for Contemporary Italian painting. 1984 was the year of the opening of the seat near via Alibert, in which the former’s son, the twenty year old Fabrizio Russo, began to work.
In 1984, after almost a hundred years of activity, the gallery went back to exhibiting in the first floor of via del Babuino 53 organizing, together with the seat of via Alibert 15/a, important personal and group exhibitions of Italian XXth Century painting, such as: Campigli, Guttuso, Gentilini, Sironi, Boccioni, Cambellotti, Afro and many others. After Salvatore’s decease in 2002 his son Fabrizio continued what had been the activity of the family of four generations and enlarging the seat of via Alibert.
Galleria Russo is located in via Alibert 20, a few steps from Piazza di Spagna.
We dedicate our spaces to the new promising talents that cohabit with painters by now established within the historical 20th Century of which, according to a family tradition, we continue to organize group and personal exhibitions.
