I am a Scottish born artist working in multi disciplines including painting, sculpture, drawing and now home and giftware design.I studied at Leeds College of Art and Design (Jakob Kramer) where Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moor and Damien Hurst are all Graduates of this famous British School.I established myself as an artist in Hull during the mid 1980;s where I studied my Batchelors, graduating in Sculpture and Installation work.
I was involved in developing and promoting feminist art politics and founder member of the first ever Women;s Art Group within the University of Humberside and co curator and Exhibitor of their First ever Women only Show; 'Women;s Views and Variations' in 1987.
I created a body of work based around the female figure and clothing, namely the corset. I researched the history of women's Clothing and developed imagery around the corset, crinolines and petticoats as a signifier of female duality, oppression, sexuality and status.
The result culminated in a large installation of sculptures for my Degree Show depicting large skirts, dresses and corsets made from metal and fabric. Many of the pieces explored the duality of femininity; the private and the public, the exterior and the interior, morality and immorality....
The singer Alison Moyet has one of these pieces in her collection and I won First Prize for Best Sculpture Degree Show.I had my first one woman Show;s in Hull and Grimsby.
I studied my Masters at Leeds University under Professopr Griselda Pollock and again produced a large body of work, which I exhibited in Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester.
