"Early Existential Ukiyo-e" (早期存在主义浮世绘)

Liu Dao

Ukiyo-e, “floating world,” the impermanence of it all. Waves here one minute and gone the next. The water rushes under me. I have never before touched these particular water molecules, and I never will again. It’s why I love coming out here morning after morning. The habit is permanent, sure. The surfing is always there. The floating, the paddling, the rhythm, these are patterns I repeat with each sunrise. But I’ve never been the me that is me in this moment before, and I never will again. How is it possible? To lose oneself over and over in the quest to know exactly what I’m doing here. The self I knew this morning isn’t the one that shakes within my body as I rise on the board. It’s an undulating, rolling self, like the waves that throw my soul in the air at dawn. Maybe it’s why I come out here. Maybe I like the feeling of having what you built the night before come unraveled with each new day. This feeling, this unexplainable, glorious destruction, this is what people mean when they say “ocean.”
