A symphony of ligaments, a decade in the sun, and unadulterated terror. These are the notes that hold up my performance out here, where no man has any reason to be. And yet, here I am, pushing long past the point where the sand bleeds through the surf, a hazy link to sanity and safety. If you turn back from the shore there’s only the dark line of the sea pushing back against the sky. A perfect line dividing two worlds that we will never fully understand. Oh, but the sharks and the riptides and the depths unknown, they cry! People who’ve never stood on top of the ocean as it roars have no business talking about what it holds. Redemption/rage/rapture all of it rolls just beneath the surface. It seeps up through the foam of my board and the soles of my feet and into the innumerable cells and bits that make up my body.
