In the hey-day of my youth I remember catching just a glimpse of you in some musty back-alley shisha bar in some exotic country I was passing through. Of course I went out of my way to look a little longer, to wonder about you a little more intensely. I imagined walking over to you and starting a conversation, us both speaking the same language and having some similar interests. We’d talk all night through the hookah smoke and end up head over heels, laughing at each others’ jokes and making love until the sun came up. I would decide to stay with you and get a job at some café, not making much money but being happy with you. We’d have a couple kids and grow old together, making a life for ourselves that most would kill for. I thought about all this and more but I walked right past you and out the door. I never saw you again but I still think about you sometimes. Usually when I’m mowing the lawn.
