"Eastern Swing" (东方的秋千)

Liu Dao

There used to be a swing on the far east side of the property my parents owned. I would go there for hours when I was younger, back when I worried about nothing at all. I’d swing and sway and drift beneath the biggest tree for miles. I’d wonder about what would happen to me, and all the people I knew. Who would be happy and successful, and who would be condemned to live and love below the roaming black clouds of bad luck. In the summer the crickets and cicadas would be so loud you couldn’t hear yourself talk, but you’d never need to anyway. Just swing and think, and even that would sometimes be too much. There aren’t many times I get to be still like that anymore. I’ve yet to find an easier place to breath or a place where you let all your muscles relax and go off-duty. It’s long gone now but I’ve been thinking about building a new one, thinkin’ about maybe giving someone else their warm eastern swing.
