“No arbitrariness, but indeed an individual and willful, as well as quality conscious selection of art.” This description of the gallery program, composed by the famous art critic Heinz Ohff, has endured for almost five decades since the foundation of gallery Poll on October 8th 1968 and remains adequate.
Although the era of the internet has taken a toll on conventional gallery work and some artists and art lovers have taken a back seat, Eva and Lothar C. Poll continue to follow their vision by engaging art lovers and collectors with extraordinary artists and interesting pieces. They defy the crowd and are passionate about sharing their enthusiasm for art. After working continuously for decades, gallery Poll places their emphasis on realism and figurative art, yet it doesn’t feel obligated to solely focus on the present and contemporary. Instead, gallery Poll is open to forgotten positions and discoveries that date back to previous decades.
At the beginning of their practice family Poll carried on the tradition of the first cooperative gallery Großgörschen 35 (1964-1968). Since then they implemented around 460 exhibitions in Berlin, showcasing paintings, sculptures, photography, drawings and graphics from Germany, the GDR, Russia, France, Italy and Spain.
Besides the artists that have been involved since the foundation, Hermann Albert, Wolfgang Petrick and Peter Sorge, many others are regularly on display, for instance the painters Ralf Kerbach, Maxim Kantor, Thomas Lange, Volker Stelzmann, Jan Schüler, Norbert Wagenbrett, L. M. Wintersberger, as well as the sculptors Sabina Grzimek, Emerita Pansowová, Hans Scheib, Joachim Schmettau and Genni/Jenny Wiegmann-Mucchi. Furthermore gallery Poll exhibits many classics, such Walter Gramatté, Jean Hélion, Herbert Kaufmann and Waldemar Grzimek. Photographers like Gundula Schulze Eldowy, Jenö Gindl, Richard Thieler or Erhard Wehrman also belong to the program. The gallery consistently offers young artists, such as Czech painter Lubomír Typlt and Russian drawer Danja Akulin, the opportunity of a forum.
To honor her many achievements in the Berlin art scene and her longtime politico-cultural engagement, Eva Poll was awarded with the Federal Cross of Merit in 1993, as well as honorary president of the Galleries Association of Berlin in 2008.
Eva and Lothar C. Poll founded gallery Poll in former West Berlin, on Niebuhrstraße, in Charlottenburg in 1968. Soon after, they moved locations to Kurfürstendamm and eventually to Lützowplatz in 1979, where they kept their domicile for 30 years. From 2009 to 2015, the gallery resided in a past parsonage of the Garnison church on Anna-Louisa-Karsch Street 9, near the museum island. In September 2015 the gallery opened their new rooms and exhibition space on Gipsstraße 3 in Berlin-Mitte, thereby gallery and Art Foundation Poll are under one roof. Altogether 350 m² exhibition space is provided. Since late 2012 Nana Poll has been working in her parents" gallery, after being in charge of the Berlin festival and the foundation Schloss Neuhardenberg within the range of communication and public relations. Now she runs the gallery together with her mother Eva Poll.
The complex of buildings on Gipsstraße 3 has an eventful past: The first catholic retirement home of Berlin, the „First Israeli kindergarden and nursery“ and the music school of Berlin-Mitte were located here, before architect Jürgen Pleuser rebuilt it to be a studio.
