About
T-Gallery was founded in the summer of 2010 when Katarína Macurová and Kristína Hečková had coffee in the pub Kozel and were pondering where in Slovakia they could show the artwork of the Mexican printmaking collective Arte Cocodrilo, which Katarína brought from her travels in Mexico. They did not find a single gallery that was willing to exhibit the pieces, so Katarína and Kristína decided to start their own gallery and “exhibit whatever they want”. During their neverending conversations in the winter 2010, which drove a lot of people crazy, this concept was further specified as “program to support and develop contemporary printmaking and drawing”
In the spring of 2011 Katarína and Kristína (now T-Gallery) put up the first version of the gallery website and on April 14th, 2011, they opened their first exhibition space in the basement of Panská 24. In September 2011, they broke down the door that divided the main space from an underground tunnel, a part of Bratislava catacombs from the 15th century. The tunnel, left in “brut” state, is used as a space to project animations, install light projects and to provide concert space for new bands as well as the already traditional T-Jam Sessions. The tunnel will soon house a printmaking press and will be the venue for printmaking workshops for those who like to smell paper, taste paint and create printmaking matrices.
At the end of 2011, T-Gallery was once again expanded by taking over a space that used to be a crystal storeroom. This achievement was celebrated by a group exhibition of 7 artists already represented by T- Gallery. The last expansion of T-Gallery happened in May 2012, when another room on the first floor was added. After its reconstruction, it is being transformed into a printmaking base, mini-bookstore, information stand, design shop and a hangout space with a comfortable couch, coffee and good art.
Currently, T-Gallery represents and exhibits young artists from Slovakia, Finland, France, Mexico and USA and cooperates with universities, schools and collectives in USA, Mexico, France, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Great Britain. In May 2012, T-Gallery organized the zeroth annual “Prize for Drawing” in which the audience and a jury picked two winners. The prize was participation in a group exhibition at a sister gallery in Paris Daniez et de Charette, which, similarly to T-Gallery, supports young artists and helps them gain recognition in the art world.
