Large Glass was founded in 2011 by Charlotte Schepke, as a commercial space for new encounters. Guided by the spirit of Marcel Duchamp, it aims to show contemporary art through a particular and uncommon lens, presenting individually conceived and curated exhibitions on a diversity of themes.
It is sited on the Caledonian Road, between Kings Cross and Islington, off the traditional gallery circuit.
Large Glass makes itself home to a variety of objects, practices and artists, and intertwines visual arts with talks, music, films, events, and tastings. It aims to establish a new model of the creative commercial space, combining elements of the shop, gallery, museum and laboratory.
It is a place to contemplate and discuss art, as well as buy it; where works of international artists are sold alongside objects and editions; where there are probing discussions, as well as wine tastings; where artists come to make and show art, and also to cook.
‘...one of the capital’s most innovative and highly-esteemed new art spaces...Large Glass may have Conceptualism’s “Big Daddy” as its presiding force, but there is nothing austere or White Cube-ish about this most convivial of spaces, which on occasions becomes an informal salon-cum-seminar room, hosting wine tastings, special dinners and talks on myriad subjects including
Joseph Beuys, Boudicea and how best to cook an octopus.’ -- Telegraph
‘Merging the functions of art gallery, shop, seminar room, and kitchen-cum-refectory, Large Glass shows and sells both art and classic modern design, all the while hosting food and wine tastings, book launches and talks on a diversity of topics. It’s a test, one guesses, of the hunch that in the long run, the small, subtle, maneuverable, interdisciplinary, and locally oriented will prove more durable and congenial than the vast, international, and shouty.’ -- Artforum
