About work:
Critic :
Not easily a painter, still uncertain about the first steps of a self learned evolution, has the courage of showing oneself to the inquiring eye of an experienced art scholar, whose eye and soul are numb by the constant contact with art. This is not the case with Marylu Melo. Carrying large canvases, and not acknowledging the limitations that cause great difficulty to those who are shy, this well borned "nordestina", moving as a veteran in the area, comes now submiting herself to the critical eye. She seeks a way to come forth looking for a place in the sun. Having awaken a tad late to the art-making, not being part of any type of art group and not knowing neither the regional nor the international art scene, she has not received any formal or conceptual influence to the poetical world of primitive painting. The unique art project to which she has delivered herself, amongst other ingredients contains vigorous expressions and a expressionist touch in a clear abstract conotation as if, in order to get to this stage, she has skipped the steps of an illusionary academic formation. We will hear a lot about this rising and corageous artist.

When I met Marylu Melo, with all her empathy, naivety, and simplicity to talk about art, she put herself as a person totally inexperienced in that matter, but she carried a baggage of knowledge that she has had no awareness. Her work transmitS an experience of a natural born artist, making use of painting materials and panels of different proportions. She is able to create and spectacular work in a bidimentional plan, bringing to the spectator, free and loose traits, strokes and spatulated, presenting a unique and unparalleled pictography that reflects her work. She prefers dark background panels, but she contrasts it with a warm colors pictography plan. So it is the work of Marylu Melo, which I consider as a post contemporary art full of energy and life itself.

met Marylu Melo a little while ago, in a cold winter Curitiban afternoon when she entered Acaiaca Art Gallery carrying a folder of her work. After presenting herself, she told me she was a painter who wanted to show some of her work.. "Must be..." - I thought - "...another of so many mistakes that come here with the intention of exposing". I was completely mistaken, I confess. I was before a painter in the real meaning of the word.. My passion for Marylu's art was instant. I was looking at pieces that were incredibly beautiful, with feeling... Art that needed no explanations, art that touches you. Paintings, simply said. I noticed competence in the use of acrilics, the expressive language, modernity, magnificent creativity, and sponteneity with canvas as a background. I am tired of seeing on a daily basis; artist "A" that seems like artist "B", who seems like artist "C", and so on... Nowadays, rare exceptions, almost all is copied and little is created. Marylu is one of these exceptions, who has a one of a kind work, unique. Marylu, discrete, correct and silent comes conquering with her space in the competitive art market. I trully believe that her work will be followed with the attention it deserves by the critic and the public. Marylu already has admirors here in Paraná. Pretty soon, take note, she will be national name, and don't doubt it, even an international name, in the art world. She will be a well deserved success.
